10.20.11

How much understanding do we need in order to obey?

Most of us know about Proverbs 3:5-6.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not trust in your own understanding. Agree with Him in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight."

Proverbs 20:24 says, "A man’s steps are decided by the Lord. How can anyone understand his own way?"

Why do we insist on understanding everything, before we will be fully engaged?

Picture, if you will a parent and a two year old, and the parent doing all that they can to explain to their child that they should share their toy with their playmates. Get the picture? We've almost all been there. The child doesn't understand, and yet we know it's the best for them. Even better, the child says, "I don't want to put my coat on." Parent: "But honey it's cold outside." Child: "I don't care, I don't want to put my coat on." Ever been there?

The question is simply, who knows best?

We know what God has promised (Jer 29:11, Matt 6:33, John 10:10, Psalm 84:11). But many times we are "stuck" because we "don't understand."

Here's a thought; "lose your mind" for just a moment and see if maybe, just maybe, God knows better.

Make an appointment today.

"Do two walk together except they make an appointment and have agreed?" Amos 3:3 amp

JUST A THOUGHT!

Have a blessed day.

Create in me a clean heart O Lord, and renew a right spirit in me. I will rejoice in this day, because you have made it. You have made me for this day, and may I be in such close "harmony" with you that your thoughts and my thoughts are one. May I walk close enough to you today to hear you even when you whisper.

I love you Lord - What an awesome God you are! What an awesome friend you are!

9.26.11

Back home from Asia. Great to be out early on the pond, cool temps are a blessing. So good to breathe fresh air.

Woke up this morning thinking about perspective. How I/we view things. My prayer this morning is that I would view life as He desires for me to view life. Each one of us has been placed on this planet for a purpose. We have been "born for such a time as this." I believe we have been positioned by Him to see and to do His will.

I talk quite a bit about "worldview" and "eternal perspective." This morning after traveling half-way around the world, I sense the need even more to gain His perspective.

As I begin this new series on "Favor," I sense just how much our Father wants to give us His favor, and how much He wants us to be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing, so that He may show us His favor.

Today, why don't you join me in believing for His favor? Let's look for His blessing, so that we may be an even greater blessing to others.

Just a thought!

"So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man." Proverbs 3:4 amp

Mon, 18 Jul 2011 07:22:56 -0700 Peace http://www.lifechurchblog.com/peace http://www.lifechurchblog.com/peace

How often are we really peaceful?

So often, we think of being somewhere peaceful as the key. Most of us would rather quickly admit that we wish we were peaceful more often.

It's interesting to me how we have to come to think of peace as a rare and sacred moment, rather than a way of life. These following scripture promises indicate that peace is not a moment in life, but rather the way we are to live our lives.

Isaiah 26:3
You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

2 Corinthians 13:11
Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you

John 14:27
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

May we take these truths and embrace them in our lives today.

If you would like to hear more on peace and related topics, then join us this weekend at Life Church of Bartlesville as we share on "Fresh."

Thu, 07 Jul 2011 07:22:00 -0700 AMAZING GOD! http://www.lifechurchblog.com/amazing-god http://www.lifechurchblog.com/amazing-god

So often we use the phrase Amazing Grace, but I was struck with the thought of "Amazing" describing the character and goodness of God. Recently I was overwhelmed by His Faithfulness. At other times in my life by His mercy. Today, by His Love. There may be other words that you might use, but Amazing and Awesome so often come to my mind.

It is so difficult for me to understand why anyone would choose to live their own life's plan, when His is so much better. I often wonder if anyone is truly living apart from His plan. It seams to be an extended form of existing, not really living. From the familiar scriptures of John 10:10 and Jeremiah 29:11, to the thousands of promises of His acceptance, forgiveness, mercy, love and grace, comes a flow of life that is truly Amazing!!

Today, let's give honor to the "Life Giver" by really living and not just existing. Find your purpose, your place and flow in His Amazing Grace! Live the life of peace and joy that He has given us, and let others know that they can make that divine connection, just as you have.

LIFE IS FOR LIVING!!

Tue, 21 Jun 2011 16:22:00 -0700 Trust http://www.lifechurchblog.com/58082422 http://www.lifechurchblog.com/58082422

A great early morning on the pond. It's going to be a warm one today and with the Oklahoma wind. It's like a convection oven. Early is the only way to get to enjoy the outdoors.

I was thinking about the scripture, "I will keep you in perfect peace....." I found that the New Living Translation of Isaiah 26:3 gave me even a better understanding. "You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

The key for me at least is the phrase "trust in you." I can try to keep "positive" scriptures in my thoughts, but they get pushed out by the "issues" of the day. It's when I really get to the root issue, that those great promises sesm to stick. The root issue is trust.

Why is it that we seem to have such difficulty trusting? I understand it as it relates to other people, but not trusting God?

The One who promised "I will never leave you or forsake you," and He never has. The One who promised "to meet our every need," and He always has. The One who "has a plan for us that is altogether good," and as we discover our destiny, we discover what He said is true.

Today, let's focus on our trust, and then I believe that our thought life will be much easier to manage. It will still take some discipline, but even doing that is part of a promise.

"I can do all things through Christ."

Enjoy this great day that He has made for you.

Enjoy His promises.

Enjoy the life He has promised.

Blessings

Fri, 10 Jun 2011 10:21:00 -0700 Feelings http://www.lifechurchblog.com/feelings http://www.lifechurchblog.com/feelings

Feelings are so interesting. Certainly God gave them to us. We love them when things are going well, and not so much when they're not. So, how are you doing today? How are your feelings? I'm in So Cal today and it may be my last real visit here as my son and his family are moving to North Carolina. No offense to N.C., but So Cal is one of my all time favorite locations.

I had my last walk with my grand-dog Mac around the lake. I pray that it wasn't my last "In and Out" (now there's one in Dallas). But things change. Life goes on and our feelings run the gamut from "sad to glad."

I have had to deal with other feelings as well, as the aging process continues. Others of you deal with the various seasons of life that you are engaged in. Starting the child-raising issues to the "empty nest." It's all good and we all need to enjoy every season of our lives, but sometimes the feelings get in the way.

I have worked through the years to develop a life based on faith; a life that ultimately trusts God, no matter what. I don't dislike my feelings, but I know from both His Word and my life experiences, that they will change and that if left unchecked they can overly influence my perspective on life and my attitude.

As I encourage myself today, may I also encourage you. Don't suppress your feelings, but don't let them dominate you either. Scripture encourages us to "Walk by faith and not by our feelings." Let's purpose to enjoy the day, enjoy the seasons of life and enjoy that God's plan for us is all good.

Blessings,

Tue, 24 May 2011 06:41:08 -0700 Tornados - Earthquakes - Tsunamis - Volcanos http://www.lifechurchblog.com/tornados-earthquakes-tsunamis-volcanos http://www.lifechurchblog.com/tornados-earthquakes-tsunamis-volcanos 5.24.11 A beautiful morning on the deck - (like So Cal) - Easy to forget the issues people are dealing with. What a day we are living in. Volcanos - Tornados - Earthquakes - Tsunamis. Then there are the "issues" closer to home. Marriage problems, Life threatening diseases, loss of employment. The care and issues of raising a family in this environment. Perspective is so important. What I believe about life determines how I perceive life, which determines what I receive from life. Believing --> Perceiving --> Receiving ! Life is not always easy and it certainly isn't always fair. The key will always be our attitude toward life. Often times it is also our attitude or perspective toward God. It's important to remember; God is God! God is Good! God Loves You! God's plans for you are Good! God's grace is always more than enough to see you and me through any and every situation. Today I chose to believe God's plan for me is good. I chose to believe His grace will take me through the day. I chose to believe His will is not for me to be a victim, or even a survivor, but a believer (one who trusts in God) who will over come. His Word is true and when I believe it and speak it over my life it is powerful and will work on my behalf. Be encouraged today, God is on your side. Remember your believing will impact your perception and enable you to receive. Every child of God can defeat the world, and our faith is what gives us this victory. 1 Jo 5:4 cev

Here's a good word and reminder for us today. We are not victims; God has given us authority (Delegated Power) to enforce the defeat of the enemy and live in victory.

1 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
2 You have taught children and infants
      to tell of your strength,[b]
   silencing your enemies
      and all who oppose you.

3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?[c]
5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God[d]
and crowned them[e] with glory and honor.
6 You gave them charge of everything you made,
putting all things under their authority—

Have A Great Day !

Today, I want to encourage you to take a moment and reflect, to adjust if need be, and to enjoy this great day God has made for us.

I pray today that you may truly live and not exist. That this day will be filled with victory and that you will even enjoy the "battles" of the day, because you know you are going to win. You have been called to be more than a conqueror, so go ahead and conquer. You are a believer, so believe. You are a lover, so love. You are a giver, so give.

Why don't you pray this prayer with me today.

Father, open my ears that I might hear. Open my eyes that I may see. Give me the wisdom that I need. The insight and understanding needed, but Lord “help my unbelief” may I trust you as never before. May I “lean” on you and stay so close to you that it would be impossible for me to “miss it”.

You are my place of safety and security. You are the one who will never leave me. You are my provider. You are my everything. Your Holy Spirit is my personal Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby.

I declare today that my God supplies all of my needs. That no weapon formed against me shall prosper. Nothing will harm me. Let God arise and my enemies run and hide. Everything I put my hand to will prosper today and everyday. I have the “mind of Christ”. “No good thing will you withhold from me as I walk in righteousness.” I walk in Love today and my love will move me to actions of faith.

This is a new day for me and for The Life Church of Bartlesville. I will hear and I will obey whatever the Holy Spirit speaks to me. I choose today to walk by faith and not by my senses. I will not live a life lower than the one God has ordained for me. I will run and not get tired today. I will persevere and overcome in every situation, because my God has made me to be an overcommer.

I will stay “In His Presence” where there is all the Joy I will ever need. I will be so full of Joy today that others will actually see it. That same Joy will strengthen me. I will live and not just exist. I will fulfill my destiny for this day and not just “make it through the day”. I will Love others as Christ has loved me.

Today will be a great day. I purpose to enjoy every minute of it. To be everything God has called me to be, and to do everything God has called me to do. What a great day this is going to be.

Thank you Lord – You are Amazing!

I Love You So Much

You’re Being Followed!

Have you ever had the sense that someone was following you? It sort of “creeps you out”. Well we do have someone following us all the time and it’s a good thing. This really stuck out to me this morning as I was reading Psalm 23.

Surely goodness, mercy, and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life. Psa 23:6 amp.

A pastor was giving a lesson to a group of children on the 23rd Psalm. He noticed that one of the little boys seemed disquieted by the phrase "Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life..."

"What's wrong with that, Johnny?" the pastor asked.

"Well," answered Johnny, "I understand about having goodness and mercy, because God is good. But I'm not sure I like having Shirley following me around all the time."

Have a blessed day. You are being followed.

Mon, 06 Sep 2010 08:58:05 -0700 Enjoy Every Day http://www.lifechurchblog.com/enjoy-every-day http://www.lifechurchblog.com/enjoy-every-day

Labor Day 2006.

You know, the day we don’t labor. Sitting on my deck enjoying almost (but not quite) fall weather. More importantly enjoying the presence of God. Take some time (each day is best) to take a breath, relax for a moment and enjoy all that God has created.

Enjoy his company, what a great friend he is. He never tells you “I’ll call you back”. He doesn’t see it’s you on caller ID and not take the call. He is amazing!

Reading Wayne Cordeiro’s “Running on Empty”. Interesting read primarily for Pastors. Some great insights into having pace, rest and living in God’s grace as a priority in your life. Good words for all of us.

Was advised this week to sign up for Medicare. That was a strong dose of reality of where I am in life. It’s not an ego thing, but since I have no plans to retire (there’s no Biblical basis for it). It sort of humored me more than anything else. I’ll do it, and I’m thankful for it, but I will do my best to never need it.

Life is filled with so many choices. I want to encourage you today to never stay in a victim mindset. We all get hit with things, but how we respond and choices we make, will in turn make us.

There is adversity in every opportunity, and opportunity in every adversity.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thes 5:18 nlt (note: Be thankful “in” – not “because of” – there is a difference)

Be Blessed

Love ya

Wed, 25 Aug 2010 05:46:12 -0700 What A Difference A Day Makes http://www.lifechurchblog.com/what-a-difference-a-day-makes http://www.lifechurchblog.com/what-a-difference-a-day-makes

What a difference a day makes, yesterday was a struggle for most of the day. I functioned, but not at my best or even close to it. I “had a lot on my mind”. I prayed, tried to praise and worship, but everything seamed to hit the ceiling and bounce back. Some days just start out that way.

Here’s where we have a part in how the day will end. We can chose to “cave in” to our feelings or continue to do what we can do and trust that God will show himself strong on our behalf. As my day continued, I just did the best I could. People were asking me if I was feeling ok. I gave them the usual “I’m ok” response.

The change came in mid afternoon as I was sitting across the table from my youngest son. We began to share things God was speaking to us and things in the ministry. The “juices” began to flow again and I began to get a better perspective on things. The rest of the day continued on the upswing.

I kept the TV off until 10pm Sports Center. All in all it was a good day.

I’m sharing all of this to encourage you (and me). There are going to be days that are more difficult than others. I want to encourage you to “stay the course”, continue to do the best you can do and watch God show up somewhere in the day and “give you a hug and tell you it will be better”. He’s just that way you know.

I'm not afraid

when you walk at my side.

You revive my drooping head;

my cup brims with blessing. (Psa 23 msg)

I heard this thought last week and felt it was worth repeating. When someone is whispering, you have to get very close to them to hear what they are saying.

Scripture records that God is in the “still small voice”. I want to get closer to Him, so that I can hear what He has to say. I need to have direction in my life.

May I encourage you, as I did our Life Church family this last weekend, to take the first 15 minutes of your day and spend it with Him. Listen to him, ask Him questions, and share your problems. Most of all let Him know you love Him.

Have a great day!

For Such A Time As This!

Many of you may be familiar with this statement of Queen Esther from the Bible. A statement of her position, and the opportunity to be a notable part of history. It is followed by her commitment statement; “If I die; I die. She went on to risk her life to save her people from genocide. Few, if any of us will go down in history for our decisions, but every decision we make effects not only us but others.

Each of us have the ability by the grace of God to impact others by the simplest of acts on our part. A smile, a hug, a kind word can help someone. The most obvious of these opportunities that we have before us today, is to share His Love with someone. To declare how good God is. To take a “risk” and reach out of our comfort zone to help someone, to love someone, to care for someone.

Mark Twain said it well. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do, than the ones you did do.

You, like Esther, have been born for such a time as this. Look for opportunities to make a difference in other peoples lives. It may not be dramatic, but it can be impactful. Take a risk today, be a blessing to someone. See yourself as significant, because you are. You are a part of an amazing master plan.

Tue, 13 Jul 2010 07:07:37 -0700 Wisdom Thoughts http://www.lifechurchblog.com/wisdom-thoughts http://www.lifechurchblog.com/wisdom-thoughts I work to make reading at least one chapter of Proverbs a part of my early morning time.

Here are some thoughts that will help us to live the life God intended, a life of wisdom peace and blessing.

A pretentious, showy life is an empty life;
a plain and simple life is a full life.

Arrogant know-it-alls stir up discord,
but wise men and women listen to each other's counsel.

Easy come, easy go,
   but steady diligence pays off.

Ignore the Word and suffer;
honor God's commands and grow rich.

Irresponsible talk makes a real mess of things,
but a reliable reporter is a healing presence.

Refuse discipline and end up homeless;
embrace correction and live an honored life.

My thanks to Eugene Peterson and his Message Translation.

Some good thoughts to keep us moving in the right direction.

Our Thoughts and Words make the path that we walk on, not the momentary circumstantial "pot-holes" in the road. Capture your thoughts and control your words and move into the fast lane of a good life.

Enjoy today - God created it for you.

SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

There is an old song by this title. Some of the lyrics go like this.

Something beautiful, something good

All my confusion He understood

All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife

But he made something beautiful of my life

Isn’t God amazing? He took you and me and is making something beautiful out of our lives. What a wonderful God.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jer 29:11 nlt

LOVING GOD WITH ALL YOUR MIND.

This past weekend I shared on “Loving God With All Your Mind”. I found the breadth of this both interesting and challenging.

TO LOVE GOD WITH ALL OF OUR MIND IS TO LOVE GOD WITH ALL OF OUR:

  THOUGHTS

  PERCEPTION

  MEMORY

  EMOTION

  WILL

  IMMAGINATION

With over 70,000 thoughts coming to us every day, this is a significant task. The grace of God is so amazing. If we will just do our part and purpose to love God, his grace will enable us to fulfill this command.

Don’t just capture the negative thoughts today, but capture those awesome creative thoughts and present them to God. You will be amazed at what will happen.

His plans are so good and so great. To live life to it’s fullest is to love God to it’s fullest. Try it, I think you will love it as you love life and love him.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, ALL YOUR MIND, and all your strength. Mark 12:30 ncv
